I Never Knew That
I recently just went to a program that was all about stereotypes and why a person stereotypes an individual before they get to know them. I found it very interesting that a lot of black people are always worried about being stereotype as being “thugs”, “hood rats” or “ratchet”. However we stereotype other races just as much and it was very interesting and surprising to hear from their point of view about the stereotypes that are attached to Asians, Hispanics, and Caucasians. The women of these other races also had a few words to say about how they are portrayed in the media as well and how the media seems to blur the lines of what is fact and what is fiction. It made me think that even though we all do not go through exactly the same situations, we are all still going after something similar…equality even though there are deeper obstacles that have to be faced for each race.

I agree with your observation. I never really thought about others in the aspect of others being stereotyped such as Asians and Hispanics. We may not go through the exact same things they are stereotyped. Hispanics are “known” for being illegal and they cannot speak English. The times have changed because African Americans were placed on the bottom of the economic social pole but Hispanics has apparently taken the spot. As we look at the television show “The Modern Family” one of the wives is Hispanic and very beautiful. The media is slowly places them in positive situations and not just landscapers and construction workers.
I enjoyed your post and could not agree more. Often Black people don’t stop to look at the stereotypes we place upon other races, when I was living in the city I recall that Asian kids getting picked on a lot just because they were in the greatest minority. They are considered timid, great at school and easily bullied. I try to not make stereotypes about anyone but it hard when its so deep in your subconsious to categorize people upon first meeting them.
